Call it a Spa
..Call it a hot tub
..Just
call me when it's ready
Whether you call your little water paradise a hot tub,
a spa, a Jacuzzi, or a Whirlpool, it equates to the same
thing; warm water therapy.
Actually, that is what the term "spa" actually
means. A spa is a therapeutic water treatment. Now the
same term is also used to mean a facility offering a variety
of cleansing and therapeutic treatments. But in its original
context, a spa is basically a synonym for the term "hot
tub".
Manufacturers still differentiate hot tubs from spas in
marketing their products. One rule of assumption is that
hot tubs are most often outdoor fixtures. People build
them into their decks in the backyard or simply have them
on the patio. Others are encased by a gazebo in the yard
for more privacy from neighbors, to combat insects, and
even allow you to soak during a rainstorm.
Most spas are one-piece and portable so they can be relocated
season-to-season. A spa can be outdoors in the summer,
but moved inside to a sun porch or a room of the house
in the colder months. The tub is almost identical to that
of an outdoors hot tub, but the hot tub may have a wooden
encasement or sections pieced together. These elements
are what make a hot tub more of a permanent fixture versus
a spa.
Some names such as Jacuzzi or Whirlpool have become such
household brands that the product is (mistakenly) referred
to by the brand name. If you have a Jacuzzi Premium tub,
you technically still have a hot tub. You have the Jacuzzi
brand. But it is still a hot tub or a spa. It is a tribute
to the Jacuzzi and Whirlpool marketing and advertising
departments that the product they sell is almost universally
thought of by the brand name.
The proliferation of day spas and destination spas has
taken the therapeutic root of the hot tub/spa genre and
expanded it to include those resorts that offer body and
cosmetic treatments. These type of treatments can be an
all-day affair or even go as long as a full week. Treatments
offered at these type of facilities include facials, massage,
waxing, body wraps, mud wraps, aromatherapy, skin exfoliation,
manicures, pedicures, and much more.
And in staying with the original concept that grew into
these full-service body shops, you can bet that most of
these spa resorts have hot tubs, sauna, and warm bath
options on the premises.
The sauna, or the steam bath as it is known, is the other
offspring of hot tubs and spas. The water therapy is taken
to another level as it is morphed into steam therapy.
In a steam room, you simply kick back and relax while
you sweat out the toxins and stress that have your body
all tensed up. It cleans you out via the combination of
heat and the release of natural body perspiration.
These are the terms most often used to summarize what
really all boils down to one thing---pardon the pun. Whether
you have a hot tub or a spa or a sauna room, you have
a bona fide, at-home therapy couch at your disposal anytime
you need it.
